As a busy working mother of four equally active children, Christchurch-based food writer and trained dietitian Sarah Bowman understands the demands of creating delicious and nutritious meals on the run. In her household, weekday dinners are generally one-dish wonders packed with flavour, texture and nutrients that even the fussiest eater will love, while weekends often bring a house full of extra children so meals need to be able to stretch to ‘feed the multitudes’.

What’s inside it?

More than 80 recipes are shared in this book of Bowman family favourites, with a focus on fresh seasonal food, cooked simply with love. Cook Simple – fresh meal ideas for busy lives has six main sections covering a bit of everything that will help you get through busy work weeks, slower weekends and special occasions:

  • Week nights – fuss-free dishes for busy nights
  • Weekends – recipes for lazy lunches and relaxed dinners
  • Occasions – Celebratory meals to share with family and friends
  • Breakfast – Simple and more indulgent ways to start the day
  • Baking – Time-honoured goodies to fill the tins
  • Basics – Homemade breads, fridge basics and flavour-boosters

Recipes vary from Pad Thai (Thailand), to Spicy Pork Lettuce Cups (Hong Kong), Herby Lamb Burgers and a traditional-style Smoked Fish Pie.

Some of our favourites include Lime Poached Chicken Salad, Energy Salad and the Chicken Pesto Pasta. The majority of the recipes contain standard ingredients that most Kiwis will have in a well stocked cupboard or that you can easily get from your supermarket. However, if you don’t have many Asian ingredients at home you may need to add a few things into your pantry such as fish sauce, sesame oil, and some specific herbs and spices. The good thing is that once you are stocked up, you will be able to use those same ingredients for a number of the recipes.

There are also some easy and delectable desserts and baking recipes for those special occasions (everything in moderation!)
