Having difficulty keeping up your energy levels even after a good night’s sleep? Here are our top tips to help energise your day.
Ditch the caffeine
It may feel like coffee and energy drinks help you get through sluggish moments, but after that initial burst of energy you’ll only end up worse half an hour later once it wears off.
Avoid the energy yoyo by swapping out these drinks for a freshly made juice or tea. Black tea still contains caffeine but a lower amount; if you want to cut it completely, look into green or herbal teas.
Have a decent breakfast
We aren’t just talking about a weak tea or single piece of fruit on your way out the door! There is a reason why we always hear that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It provides you with much-needed energy after your body has gone without food for a long period of time while you have been asleep. Try to incorporate some carbohydrate, some protein and some good fats.
Options could include:
– Wholegrain toast, avocado and poached or scrambled eggs
– Muesli topped with yoghurt, fresh fruit and a small handful of nuts
– Bagel, cream cheese, rocket and salmon
Drink plenty of water
When you get dehydrated you can start to feel sluggish, so drink plenty of water throughout your day. If you have trouble remembering, get into the habit of having water with breakfast, morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. Also, carry a water bottle around with you at all times and you’re more likely to drink it.
Skip the sugar
Like the caffeine/energy drink scenario, sugar will give you a brief spike of energy, but once your body has processed in, you will be left feeling tired again. Avoid the energy yoyo by skipping processed sugar and opting for something savoury instead. If you can’t ditch your sweet tooth, eat a piece of fruit – although it contains natural sugar (fructose), you will get the benefits of the vitamins, minerals and fibre.
Have a power nap
Feeling so tired you need to sleep? Set your alarm and have a 30 minute power nap. Try to resist napping for longer in the middle of the day as it may affect your evening rest or you may wake up feeling worse than before you went to sleep!
Stretch your body
Stretching gets your blood flowing and helps to oxygenate your body, even a short stretching session can help you feel recharged.
Get huffy puffy!
Exercise may seem like the opposite of what you should do when you’re feeling low on energy, but a brisk walk in the fresh outside air can help get your blood flowing and kickstart those feelgood endorphins – both of which can help if you’re feeling tired.
