Summer may almost be over, but don’t despair as there are still plenty of outdoor events to help you take advantage of what’s left of our gorgeous warm weather! Here are our top picks:
Jim Beam Homegrown
Any event that takes up the whole of the Wellington waterfront is worthwhile going to! Six stages – each with its own flavour of music – are set up to showcase the best of Kiwi music. Shihad, Elemeno-P, Shapeshifter, Home Brew, Zowie, Ruby Frost, Kora and Concord Dawn are among the acts you can see here. Unfortunately, if you haven’t already scored your ticket, the event has now sold out (for the sixth year in a row!). If you HAVE got your ticket, prep yourself to dance all night!
Where: Wellington Waterfront

Pasifika Festival 2013
The Pasifika Festival has now been going strong for 21 years and is one of Auckland’s biggest cultural events. Experience the tastes, sounds, sights and colours of the Pacific – all in one place. Divided into 10 ‘villages’, each showcasing a different pacific island nation, this two day event is a must-see (especially as the entry is free!).
Where: Western Springs Stadium, Auckland
When: 9 & 10 March 2013
Auckland Cup Week
Horses, fascinators and fashion – what’s not to like? The mix of fine food and entertainment that goes along with it is pretty fantastic too. See some of the very best standardbred racehorses and witness first class harness racing – be part of the action!
Where: Alexandra Park Raceway
When: 1, 5 & 8 March 2013
Balloons Over Waikato
This free entry festival is a major iconic event for the Waikato region. The balloons ascend at 7.30am each morning so make sure you’re up early to watch the gorgeous colours. Pack a picnic and if you’re daring, go on a balloon ride. Then in the evening relax to the glow of the balloons and a great fireworks display.
