How to improve your confidence

Looking and appearing confident can actually go a long way towards making you feel it from the inside. So how do you go about seeming confident on the outside? Here are some tips to help you find your feet.

Focus on what you CAN do

Sometimes we have a tendency to look at all the things we can’t do. Instead, make a list of all the things you are good at. It could be that you’re a good listener, you’re well organised, you are a great friend… Keep this list somewhere handy so you can whip it out when you need a confidence boost.

Look the part; feel the part

Looking confident happens through a number of small ‘adjustments’ that can be quite subtle, but effective when put together. Stand tall – if you have terrible posture, take up yoga classes to help iron your back out!, walk with confidence (don’t shuffle or drag your feet), smile and make good eye contact, and don’t forget to dress the part.

If makeup makes you feel more confident but you don’t usually use it, get someone to teach you how to apply natural-looking makeup that enhances your features to wear on a daily basis. Wear clothes that enhance your figure and make you feel confident, not the ones that may end up in wardrobe malfunctions or cause you to feel self conscious. Slouchy trackpants and your boyfriend’s t-shirt may feel comfy at home, but they won’t make you feel like Angelina Jolie when you’re out and about!

Find a confidence ‘person’

Think of someone who you reckon exudes confidence – it could be a friend, family member, work colleague, acquaintance or celebrity. Think of them as your confidence mentor and when you find your confidence waning, ask yourself what they would do in your situation.

Remember that everyone has confidence issues at some point

It just affects some people more than others. Like anything, practice makes perfect, so keep at it and eventually it will be second nature!
