Thinking of heading for warmer climates and taking a winter break? It would be good for you in more ways than one, especially if your fitness routine has hit a rut and turned into something you dread!
Many of the usual excuses such as limited time and lack of energy don’t apply when you’re on holiday, so it’s the perfect time to kickstart a new exercise routine and make fitness fun again.
Try something new
Use your time away to do activities you wouldn’t normally do; you never know what you might enjoy if you just give it a go. Whether you’re going by yourself, with friends or with family, it’s great to get out and try new things. Snorkelling, windsurfing, parasailing, tennis, surfing, kayaking…
It may seem the opposite of having a relaxing break, but you will still have plenty of time to kick back. Plus, you will be having so much fun you’ll forget you’re exercising, you’ll sleep better at night and while you’re at it, you’ll be catching some extra Vitamin D if you’re outside.
Stress control!
Getting out and about on your holiday is not just about physical activity and mood-lifting endorphins. High stress levels from everyday life have been linked to weight gain and can result in difficulty shifting excess weight. Holidays are a great way of controlling stress – when you return you’ll be reenergised and ready to take on the world (and the gym!) again.
Go wandering
Take the time to walk and explore – you can miss a lot of sights if you just drive everywhere. If you normally run on the treadmill, try running along the beach or go for a bushwalk instead. Yoga on the beach can be a fantastic start to the day if you normally attend classes. Options are endless so get out and give them a go!
